Did Youth Congress Members Breach Security During AI Summit?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 20 (NationPress) The Delhi Police have refrained from providing a detailed explanation following a protest led by members of the Indian Youth Congress inside Bharat Mandapam during the India AI Impact Summit on Friday.
The protesters voiced their dissent against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central government, raising issues such as unemployment, inflation, and the India-US trade agreement.
When IANS inquired how the demonstrators managed to breach security at the prestigious venue, Additional DCP Anand Mishra only stated that the Delhi Police were “taking action” regarding the incident.
Reports indicate that some Youth Congress members removed their shirts and shouted slogans like “PM is compromised” inside the venue. They also positioned themselves in front of an India AI Summit display board, taking photos and attempting to disrupt the event before security intervened.
The protesters were quickly apprehended and removed to prevent further disturbance of the international event, which was graced by senior government officials, industry leaders, and foreign delegates. They were subsequently taken to the Tilak Marg Police Station for interrogation and potential legal repercussions.
Authorities indicated that proper action was being initiated against those who violated security protocols. However, it remains unclear how the protesters gained entry despite robust security measures.
Uttar Pradesh government minister Kapil Aggarwal criticized the protest, claiming that the Congress party has a history of “insulting India on the global stage”.
Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib defended the protest, arguing that it was peaceful and within their democratic rights. “The government is doing nothing to provide jobs to the unemployed. They hold events but ignore ground realities. Farmers will suffer because of the India-US trade deal. We have a right to protest in a democracy. No laws were broken,” he asserted.
Chib further stated that the slogans echoed the anger of the nation’s youth over escalating prices and lack of job opportunities.
A summit attendee criticized the disruption, advocating for dialogue instead of opposition. “We are working for the country. If you disagree, articulate your views properly,” the visitor remarked.
Later, the Youth Congress issued a statement asserting that the protest aimed to draw attention to concerns that “corporate interests are being prioritized over national interests” and claimed that the government’s foreign policy had weakened. They attributed the demonstration to economic hardships, citing the growing frustration among youth regarding unemployment and inflation.
