A Study Reveals That 50% of American Teens Are Nearly Always Online

New Delhi, Dec 13 (NationPress) A recent investigation reveals that 50% of teenagers in the United States are nearly always engaged on social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat, raising alarms about the effects of technology on young individuals.

Conducted by the Pew Research Centre, the study surveyed American teenagers aged 13 to 17 and found that nine out of ten respondents primarily use YouTube.

In total, 73% of teenagers stated they access YouTube daily, making it the most frequently visited platform. This figure includes 15% who describe their usage as “almost constant.”

“Almost half of teenagers report being online almost constantly, a significant increase from 24% a decade ago. This percentage has remained stable over the last few years. Overall, nearly all teenagers – 96% – claim to use the internet daily,” the report highlighted.

This concerning finding arises alongside the recent decision by the Australian government, which enacted a ban on social media for children under 16, affecting platforms like Instagram, X, Snapchat, and others starting in late 2025.

Additionally, the Pew research indicated that around 60% of American teenagers reported using TikTok and Instagram, while 55% mentioned their usage of Snapchat.

About 60% also stated they visit TikTok daily, which includes 16% who claim to be almost constantly on it.

Approximately half of the teenagers reported daily visits to Instagram or Snapchat, which includes around 10% who say they are almost constantly present on these platforms.

The proportion of teenagers using Instagram almost constantly has seen a slight rise, from 8% in 2023 to 12% currently.

On the other hand, the use of Facebook (at 32%) and X (at 17%) has considerably dropped among teenagers over the last decade.

Moreover, about a quarter of teenagers (23%) reported using WhatsApp, while 14% indicated they use Reddit.

Across all five platforms, one-third of teens utilize at least one of these sites almost constantly.

Interestingly, “no gender differences” were noted regarding the proportions of teenagers using Instagram and Facebook almost constantly.

However, teenage girls use Instagram (66% vs. 56%) and TikTok more extensively than boys (66% vs. 59%). Conversely, boys are more likely than girls to use YouTube (93% vs. 87%).
