Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi/United Nations, Feb 19 (NationPress) The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, stated on Thursday that organizing the AI summit in India carries a “special meaning” as the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology should not be monopolized by a select few nations or affluent individuals.
“AI should be accessible to all. We must transition from hype and fear to shared evidence and eliminate knowledge disparities,” he remarked during the opening ceremony of the India AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
“Holding this event in India holds special significance,” he emphasized. “It brings this crucial dialogue closer to the realities that influence much of the world, as the future of AI cannot be dictated by a few nations or left to the whims of a handful of billionaires.”
While addressing global leaders, tech innovators, and delegates from over 100 countries, he expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and France’s President Emmanuel Macron for organizing the summit.
The conversations at the New Delhi summit will pave the way for the UN’s Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva scheduled for July, he noted.
This meeting was called by the General Assembly.
The dialogue “will ensure that every country has a platform” in discussions on the “guardrails that maintain human agency, oversight, and accountability,” he added.
This upcoming meeting aims “to make progress on unified safety protocols — a foundation for interoperability that fosters trust across borders for regulators and businesses, transforming compatibility into opportunities.”
Guterres also highlighted another initiative from the General Assembly, the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, comprising 40 experts worldwide.
“I encourage member states, industry, and civil society to engage in the Panel’s initiatives,” he stated.
