Is AIIMS Offering a Free Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Test for Epilepsy Patients?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has launched a complimentary therapeutic drug monitoring test specifically for individuals suffering from epilepsy, as stated by the institution.
Epilepsy is a persistent neurological condition characterized by recurrent seizures, which result from sudden, abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Symptoms may include muscle spasms, confusion, loss of consciousness, or psychological alterations.
According to AIIMS, the therapeutic drug monitoring test is designed to quantify the levels of certain medications in a patient's bloodstream. This ensures that the prescribed dosage is both safe and effective.
“Patients with epilepsy often require multiple medications. AIIMS has made the decision to provide complimentary testing for monitoring phenobarbital, carbamazepine, valproic acid, and phenytoin,” the statement elaborated.
“This drug monitoring test assesses the concentrations of these medications in the blood, allowing for an evaluation of their effectiveness and aiding in determining the correct dosage. It also identifies any potential drug toxicity,” it added.
The esteemed healthcare institution highlighted that with this new service, patients will no longer need to seek external facilities for testing, nor will they incur any fees.
Previously, patients had to pay between Rs 390 and Rs 1,880 for therapeutic drug monitoring tests at external facilities.
In a circular released on January 1, signed by Prof. Nirupam Madaan, Medical Superintendent, AIIMS instructed all departments and centers, including the National Cancer Institute (NCI), to direct patient samples to the designated laboratory for testing.
Both inpatients and outpatients are eligible for this testing service, the institute confirmed.
This service will be accessible to AIIMS Delhi OPD patients at Collection Center Room Number 3 from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM, and also at the National Cancer Institute located at AIIMS Jhajjar.
