Doctors in Lucknow Successfully Extract 15 cm Giant Gallbladder from 35-Year-Old Woman

New Delhi, Dec 7 (NationPress) A group of surgeons in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has successfully excised an exceptionally large gallbladder, exceeding 15 cm, from a 35-year-old female patient, which has transformed her health status.

Shalini Tiwari sought treatment at the hospital due to intense abdominal discomfort. An ultrasound examination indicated the presence of gallstone disease, characterized by hardened deposits within the gallbladder. During the surgical procedure, the medical team discovered that, in addition to the gallstones, the gallbladder was notably oversized.

“During the operation, we discovered that the patient had a giant gallbladder, measuring over 15 cm. Typically, a normal gallbladder ranges from 7-8 cm. The surgical procedure known as giant cholecystectomy is quite uncommon, with only nine cases reported globally to date,” stated Dr. Suramya Pandey, a general surgeon at Lucknow Civil Hospital, in an interview with IANS on Saturday.

The surgical team managed the patient adeptly, and the operation proceeded without any complications, according to the doctor.

Dr. Pandey mentioned that Tiwari was discharged after five days, free from any post-operative issues.

The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ located just beneath the liver in the upper right abdomen, responsible for collecting and storing bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver.

A giant gallbladder is a rare condition, which may arise from cholecystitis—a condition involving inflammation of the gallbladder—as well as gallstones, gallbladder cancer, or other medical ailments. It can manifest in individuals of any age and may resemble an abdominal tumor.

Individuals experiencing gallbladder issues often report sudden, severe, and sharp pain in the upper right abdomen or centrally below the breastbone. Additional symptoms may include back pain between the shoulder blades and discomfort in the right shoulder, among others.
