New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) Frequent consumption of fast food, from deep-fried street snacks to meals from fast-food chains, poses significant health risks that can ultimately lead to various illnesses, including cancer and cardiovascular diseases, which may result in death, experts warned on Saturday.
This caution comes in light of recent viral social media posts regarding the tragic death of an 11th-grade student from Amroha district, Uttar Pradesh, who was hospitalized at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi last month, allegedly due to excessive junk food intake.
While the girl's family claimed she was afflicted with an intestinal infection that caused her demise, reports indicated she was grappling with multiple health conditions, such as severe typhoid and tuberculosis.
Doctors at AIIMS attributed her death to cardiac arrest.
Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, Ex-President of IMA Cochin and Convener of the Research Cell in Kerala, remarked, “Regular excessive eating leads to obesity, fatty liver, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, but it is not a direct cause of intestinal perforation.”
He added, “In young Indian adults, absent trauma, the primary causes of intestinal perforation include duodenal ulcers, typhoid, tuberculosis, or severe appendicitis. The leading factors for ulcers of the stomach and duodenum are Helicobacter pylori infections and excessive painkiller usage.”
Fast food consumption is associated with increased weight gain, poor nutritional intake, digestive problems, energy crashes, and mood fluctuations. Such consequences can lead to obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and mental health issues, all of which could increase mortality risk over time.
Research indicates a correlation between fast food consumption and “all-cause mortality,” suggesting a greater risk of early death. Unhealthy diets, including fast food, are linked to around 11 million deaths worldwide each year.
“Regular consumption of fast food can insidiously harm the heart, liver, and blood vessels, causing obesity, elevated sugar levels, and high blood pressure, which heightens the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and sudden death—even in young individuals who seem healthy,” stated Prof. Dr. Naresh Bansal from a prominent Delhi hospital.
