New Delhi, Dec 20 (NationPress) The Union government allocates Rs 30-35 lakh for each MBBS student, stated Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Saturday, as he called upon the new doctors to serve society actively.
Speaking at the 21st annual convocation of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, the Minister emphasized the significant advancements made in India's healthcare and medical education over the past decade.
Nadda remarked, “The government invests between 30-35 lakh on every MBBS student,” urging the graduates to engage in research and academics while taking on greater responsibilities toward society.”
He noted that from having just one AIIMS at the turn of the last century, India now boasts 23 AIIMS institutions, showcasing the government's dedication to enhancing quality healthcare and medical education across all regions.
Additionally, he disclosed that in the past 11 years, the total number of medical colleges has surged from 387 to 819.
Undergraduate medical seats have expanded from 51,000 to 1,19,000, while postgraduate seats have increased from 31,000 to 80,000.
Looking ahead to 2029, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an extra 75,000 seats will be introduced at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with over 23,000 seats already added within a year.
Nadda also highlighted that more than 1.82 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are currently operational in the nation, offering comprehensive primary care services.
He mentioned that over 62 crore individuals, representing more than 40 percent of India’s population, benefit from health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY scheme, the largest health coverage initiative globally.
The Union Minister congratulated the graduating students and praised KGMU for its role in advancing medical science education and patient care in India.
“KGMU ranks 8th in the 2025 NIRF rankings, with 12 faculties recognized among the top 2 percent of scientists by Stanford University, which is a remarkable feat,” he noted.
He encouraged the graduates to commit to lifelong learning and innovation, dedicated to furthering medical science and serving society with compassion.
