How is the Modi government fostering natural farming in Bhagalpur?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In Bhagalpur, Bihar, the Modi-led Union government is actively promoting natural and organic farming as part of its initiative to enhance the livelihoods of farmers and support their journey towards becoming 'Aatmanirbhar' (self-sufficient). With an emphasis on sustainable agricultural practices, the government is providing essential training and financial aid to empower local farmers.
The initiative aims to elevate farming along the banks of the sacred Ganga River by offering monetary support to farmers in the region. One local beneficiary expressed gratitude for the government's efforts, highlighting the positive impact on soil fertility.
Another farmer, Ved Vyas Chaudhary, shared insights with IANS, stating, "The government is now emphasizing organic and natural farming. Farmers engaged in these practices are receiving per-acre financial assistance. A statewide campaign is underway to promote organic farming, particularly near riverbanks, while minimizing chemical fertilizer usage. Clusters have been established in every district across Bihar."
He further explained, "The soil in this area is highly fertile, so the focus on natural farming is crucial. The goal is to protect our fields from the detrimental effects of chemical pesticides and fertilizers."
Chaudhary also mentioned that he has identified seven blocks for natural farming, which include 10 clusters, each comprising around 125 farmers. Two Krishi Sakhis have been appointed in each cluster to provide training to farmers.
He noted, "There has been an announcement regarding the promotion of indigenous cows alongside natural farming. If executed properly, this initiative holds great potential. Many farmers like myself can contribute to preserving the Ganga from pollution through natural farming practices."
