Paris, Feb 11 (NationPress) India is advancing AI applications aimed at societal benefit and boasts one of the globe's largest pools of AI talent, as highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address on Tuesday. He emphasized that the nation is eager to share its knowledge and proficiency to guarantee that the future of AI is beneficial and inclusive.
While speaking at the 'AI Action Summit', PM Modi noted that India is also in the process of developing its own large language model (LLM), taking into account its diverse population.
“We have established a distinctive public-private partnership model that pools resources such as computing power, making it accessible to our start-ups and researchers at affordable prices,” the Prime Minister explained.
He further remarked that while the positive prospects of AI are extraordinary, it is crucial to address the various biases that warrant careful examination.
“It is essential to create quality data sets devoid of biases. We must democratize technology and develop applications that center around people. Additionally, we need to tackle issues concerning cybersecurity, disinformation, and deepfakes, ensuring that technology has roots in local ecosystems to be effective and useful,” PM Modi underscored.
As AI evolves at an unmatched scale and pace, its adoption is happening even more rapidly. There exists a profound interdependence across nations.
“Thus, there is a pressing need for collective global initiatives to set governance and standards that uphold our shared values, mitigate risks, and foster trust,” stated the Prime Minister.
Recently, the country announced plans to launch a safe and secure indigenous AI model within six months at a reasonable cost. In alignment with India’s broader ambition to become a global AI hub, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced during her Union Budget address the establishment of three Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in AI for educational purposes.
According to PM Modi, effective governance transcends merely managing risks and rivalries.
“Governance also entails ensuring access for all, particularly in the Global South, where capacities are often insufficient, whether it be in computing power, talent, data, or financial resources,” he remarked.
“AI holds the potential to transform millions of lives by enhancing health, education, agriculture, and much more. It can pave the way for a world where achieving Sustainable Development Goals is simpler and quicker,” added the Prime Minister.
To achieve this, the global community must create open-source systems that promote trust and transparency.
Addressing concerns about job losses due to AI, the Prime Minister noted that history demonstrates that jobs do not vanish due to technology.
“Instead, their nature evolves, leading to the creation of new job types. We must invest in skilling and re-skilling our workforce for an AI-driven future,” he advised.
India has successfully established a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) serving over 1.4 billion people at minimal cost. This infrastructure is built on an open and accessible network, complete with regulations and a diverse range of applications to modernize the economy, reform governance, and enhance citizens' lives.
“We have harnessed the power of data through our Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture. Additionally, we have democratized and made digital commerce accessible to everyone. This vision is the cornerstone of India’s National AI Mission,” PM Modi stated.
Presently, India is at the forefront of AI adoption and techno-legal frameworks regarding data privacy.
“We are on the brink of the AI age that will influence humanity’s trajectory. While some express concerns about machines exceeding human intelligence, the key to our collective future and shared destiny rests solely in human hands,” the Prime Minister concluded.
