New Delhi, Aug 29 (NationPress) Shipments of ‘Made in India’ smartphones witnessed a remarkable growth of 15% year-on-year (YoY) during the April–June quarter of 2025 (Q1 FY26). This surge was significantly bolstered by a 32% increase in exports and an 8% rise in domestic sales, according to a recent report released on Friday.

The latest findings from Counterpoint Research’s 'Make in India Tracker' indicate that Dixon Technologies has emerged as the leading smartphone manufacturer in the country for the first time, achieving an astounding 196% annual growth.

Having climbed from sixth position last year, the company benefited from a surge in orders from brands like Motorola, Transsion, Xiaomi, and realme.

Foxconn Hon Hai secured the second position with a commendable 71% growth, primarily driven by robust iPhone exports.

Bhagwati Products Limited (BPL), which manufactures devices for vivo and OPPO, made its debut in the top five manufacturers and emerged as the fastest-growing player, with production exceeding 2 million units per month.

Tata also reported consistent gains, propelled by both domestic and export demands.

According to Senior Research Analyst Prachir Singh, Indian EMS (electronics manufacturing services) providers are increasingly taking on greater roles as global and Chinese smartphone brands seek to outsource their production.

“Looking ahead, we anticipate that the EMS landscape in India will continue to flourish, with local manufacturers reaping the benefits. Initiatives like the government’s Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme and collaborations with global ODMs are pivotal for the advancement of the electronics manufacturing supply chain,” he stated.

This growth is set against the backdrop of India’s swift evolution into a global hub for mobile manufacturing.

As previously reported in Parliament, mobile phone exports have skyrocketed 127 times over the last decade, soaring from just Rs 0.01 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2 lakh crore in 2024-25.

Production has expanded by 28-fold during the same timeframe, with the number of mobile manufacturing units increasing from a mere two in 2014 to over 300 in 2025.

Thanks to flagship government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI), Electronics Manufacturing Clusters, and SPECS, India has transitioned from being heavily reliant on mobile phone imports to nearing self-sufficiency, while creating an estimated 25 lakh jobs across the electronics sector.

Point of View

It's evident that the growth of smartphone manufacturing in India represents a significant shift towards self-reliance. With government initiatives driving this transformation, it is crucial for the nation to continue fostering local industries while attracting global partnerships. The future is bright, and it’s a testament to India's potential as a major player in the electronics sector.
