Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Jan 4 (NationPress) Over 50,000 subscribers of KT Corp., the second-largest mobile service provider in South Korea, have terminated their contracts following the company's decision to eliminate early termination fees after a significant data breach, as reported by industry insiders.
Sources indicate that 52,661 KT customers transitioned to competing carriers from Wednesday to Saturday. A substantial majority, exceeding 70%, have chosen to switch to SK Telecom Co, according to Yonhap news agency.
On Saturday alone, 21,027 individuals departed from KT, with 13,616 opting for SK Telecom, the sources revealed.
As the leading mobile carrier, SK Telecom has quickly taken steps to welcome back KT customers, including those who previously departed after KT's own hacking incident last year, resulting in some former clients returning.
In the meantime, KT Corp's CEO urged staff on Friday to enhance efforts to rebuild customer trust and stay alert against potential cyber threats across all divisions of the telecom company.
"Every aspect of our operations—ranging from networking and marketing to customer service—has become a potential target for cyberattacks and requires protection," stated CEO Kim Young-shub in his New Year message, referring to a significant data breach reported in September that caused numerous unauthorized micro-payments.
"Without this profound shift in awareness, we cannot defend ourselves against increasingly sophisticated security threats," he emphasized.
Kim urged employees to come together to restore customer trust while outlining the company’s long-term growth strategy focused on artificial intelligence (AI).
He mentioned that KT aims to enhance its capabilities in AI transformation and position itself as a leading global AI partner.
"By continually advancing our AI transformation capabilities and embracing bold innovation, we can maintain our growth as a premier AI transformation partner recognized by our customers and the market," Kim added.
