Seoul, Jan 3 (NationPress) Over 30,000 customers of KT Corp, which is the second-largest mobile carrier in South Korea, have decided to cancel their services after the company announced it would waive contract termination penalties due to a significant data breach incident, according to industry sources on Saturday.

As reported, 31,634 KT users switched to alternative carriers from Wednesday to Friday. Out of these, 18,720 subscribers, representing over 70 percent, transferred to SK Telecom Co., while around 7,200 users opted for LG Uplus Corp, as per Yonhap news agency.

Observers in the industry believe that the high migration rate to SK Telecom can be attributed to their favorable subscriber acquisition policies.

SK Telecom has been reinstating membership benefits for individuals who had previously departed the company following a hacking incident last year, which has encouraged former customers who switched to KT to return.

The CEO of KT Corp has called on employees to enhance efforts to rebuild customer trust and maintain vigilance against potential cyber threats across all sectors of the telecom company.

"Every single task we undertake—ranging from networking and marketing to customer service—now stands as a potential target for attacks and requires protection," stated Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kim Young-shub in his New Year's address, referencing the major data breach reported in September that resulted in unauthorized micropayments.

"Without a change in our awareness, we cannot defend against ever-evolving security challenges," he emphasized.

Kim urged the workforce to collaborate in restoring customer confidence while outlining the company’s long-term growth strategy focused on artificial intelligence (AI).

He indicated that KT aims to fortify its AI transformation capabilities and seeks to establish itself as a leading global AI partner.

"Through persistent enhancement of our AI capabilities and a commitment to bold innovation, we can maintain our status as a premier AI transformation partner recognized by both customers and the market," Kim concluded.

Point of View

It is essential to approach this situation with impartiality. The mass migration of customers from KT Corp highlights significant concerns regarding cybersecurity in the telecommunications industry. It serves as a wake-up call for companies to prioritize customer trust and data protection. Furthermore, this incident underscores the competitive nature of the mobile carrier market in South Korea, where customer loyalty can shift dramatically based on service reliability and security.
