Is Indian Register of Shipping and Neptunus Leading the Way in Indigenous Marine Engine Condition-Monitoring Technology?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Oct 31 (NationPress) In a significant milestone for India’s maritime landscape and a progressive step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat, Neptunus Power Plant Services and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday during Maritime India Week 2025. This collaboration aims to integrate data-driven maintenance and digital diagnostics within India’s shipping sector.
Through this MoU, IRS and Neptunus are set to propel the creation of the world’s first-ever data-driven, condition-based maintenance system tailored for India’s maritime industry.
As part of the agreement, IRS has granted 'Type Approval Certification' to Neptunus for its VIB 360 engine condition monitoring system and torque sense SHAPOLI, marking a historic first for indigenously developed, IRS-certified condition-monitoring technologies for marine diesel engines and propulsion systems.
This certification highlights India’s potential to provide globally compliant, export-ready maritime solutions developed entirely within the country, as stated in an official release.
Historically, ship maintenance adhered to fixed OEM intervals, which was both conservative and costly.
With VIB 360, fleets can transition to condition-based maintenance (CBM), effectively eliminating unexpected downtimes, boosting reliability, decreasing maintenance costs by up to 30 percent (based on past experiences), optimizing fuel consumption, and consequently lowering emissions.
“This transition from time-based to data-driven maintenance is a pivotal step in India’s Digital Maritime Vision; it will enhance operational reliability, reduce downtimes, and cut carbon emissions through precise diagnostics,” the statement outlined.
“We express our gratitude to IRS for their vision and faith in Indian innovation. This Type Approval is not merely a certification; it affirms India’s ability to create and implement data-led maritime technologies that align with global standards,” stated Uday Purohit, MD and CEO of Neptunus Power Plant Services Pvt. Ltd.
Together, we are forging a path for Indian-built systems that enhance safety, efficiency, and operational reliability in shipping fleets worldwide, he added.
Under the MoU, IRS and Neptunus will collaboratively establish frameworks and standards for CBM, facilitating the maritime industry’s shift from conventional, time-based maintenance to real-time, data-driven practices.
This partnership aims to improve operational reliability, cut maintenance costs, and support India's green shipping and digital maritime initiatives.
Akshay Purohit, Director and COO, remarked, “This MoU is a significant step towards making condition-based maintenance a standard practice in India’s maritime sector. By merging local innovation with data-driven insights, we are crafting a framework that can minimize downtime, enhance fuel efficiency, and prolong asset lifespan.”
