Projected Alzheimer’s Cases in Eight Major Markets to Reach 22.51 Million by 2033: Study

New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) The number of prevalent cases of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) across the eight major global markets is anticipated to experience an annual growth rate (AGR) of 4.08 percent, increasing from 15.99 million in 2023 to 22.51 million by 2033, according to a report released on Monday.

China is expected to have the highest prevalence of AD cases (based on DSM-IV criteria), with an estimated 10.4 million cases, while Spain is projected to have the lowest at 0.62 million cases by 2033, according to findings from GlobalData, a prominent data and analytics firm.

“In 2023, women are disproportionately affected, making up around 73 percent of the total prevalent cases,” stated Antara Bhattacharya, associate project manager of the epidemiology team.

Individuals aged 75 years and older accounted for nearly 79 percent of all prevalent AD cases in these eight markets in 2023, while younger adults aged 65-74 years represented about 21 percent of the cases.

The report projected that in 2023, approximately 55 percent of total prevalent AD cases were classified as mild, whereas just 16 percent were severe.

“Mortality is a significant concern for those living with AD and their loved ones. Preventing or delaying the onset of the disease could greatly influence long-term outcomes, as the efficacy of treatment largely hinges on its ability to reduce morbidity and enhance life expectancy,” Bhattacharya added.

In-depth research can deepen our insight into the critical connection between AD and mortality.

“Furthermore, managing AD necessitates a comprehensive strategy that combines medical treatments, lifestyle changes, ongoing support, clinical trials, and follow-up care,” the report emphasized.
