Rising Demand for Cultured Meat in the APAC Region: Latest Insights

New Delhi, Dec 30 (NationPress) The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is witnessing an uptick in enthusiasm for cultured meat or lab-grown meat, as highlighted in a report released on Monday.

Meat serves as a vital source of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and vitamins essential for fulfilling human energy needs.

As conventional animal farming practices struggle to keep pace with the surging demand, cultivated meat is stepping in as a viable alternative protein source, according to the report by GlobalData, a firm specializing in data and analytics.

“Countries in the APAC region are actively pursuing avenues to produce cultured meat, propelled by technological advancements and increased consumer awareness regarding sustainable practices,” remarked Bynagari Susmitha, Consumer Analyst at GlobalData.

This shift occurs amidst growing concerns regarding the environmental ramifications of traditional livestock farming, including heightened greenhouse gas emissions, water shortages, and land overexploitation.

“Approximately three-quarters of agricultural land is allocated to animal husbandry, which significantly restricts the land available for grain production. Additionally, meat production contributes substantially to greenhouse gas emissions within the food industry. Cultivated meat, also referred to as lab-grown meat, offers a sustainable alternative with a reduced environmental footprint,” Susmitha stated.

The report emphasized a “notable shift in consumer preferences towards alternative protein sources.” According to Susmitha, this trend is paving the way for broader acceptance and integration of cultured meat products.

Susmitha identified Singapore as a leading example of this cultural transformation.

The nation has embraced cultured meats to diversify its food offerings and “recognizes the potential to emerge as a global frontrunner by supporting both local and international enterprises,” Susmitha added.

Moreover, the report referenced GlobalData’s Q3 Consumer Survey conducted in Asia and Australasia, revealing that 81% of the 6,163 participants prioritize sustainable or environmentally friendly attributes when selecting food and beverage products.

“In our collective fight against climate change, cultured meat or lab-grown meat significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional meat production, promotes ethical treatment of animals, and addresses the increasing demand for high-protein food options,” Susmitha noted.

The report anticipates a surge in investments and regulatory measures concerning cultured meat technologies as APAC nations strive to fulfill their food security and sustainability goals.

“This will cultivate a competitive market landscape and spur scientific advancements in the region,” Susmitha concluded.
