Dharamshala, Dec 14 (NationPress) Former batting coach for India, Sanjay Bangar, has urged Shubman Gill to prioritize traditional strokes for scoring in the upcoming third T20I against South Africa, instead of attempting extravagant shots during the match at HPCA Stadium this Sunday evening.
Gill, who is already the captain for India in ODIs and Tests, serves as the vice-captain for T20Is, where the leadership is under Suryakumar Yadav. However, Gill's performance since his return to the T20I squad following the Asia Cup has sparked concerns. Across 14 T20I innings this year, he has accumulated merely 263 runs, averaging 23.9, with a strike rate of 142.93, and notably, he has yet to score a fifty.
With the current five-match T20I series between India and South Africa tied at 1-1, all eyes are on Gill’s performance ahead of the match in Dharamsala. “I want to clarify his role: there’s no requirement for big hits—he should focus on proper cricketing strokes, especially with so many capable scorers behind him,” Bangar stated.
“Establish a strong foundation, particularly in critical moments or during low-scoring matches. India requires a player like Gill who can navigate challenging overs, manage the new ball, and withstand early setbacks, much like his dismissal on the very first ball,” Bangar commented on JioStar.
Dharamshala presents yet another opportunity for Gill to validate the confidence the management has placed in him for T20I matches and secure his position at the top ahead of next year's T20 World Cup, which is set to take place in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026.
After the match in Dharamsala, India and South Africa will compete in the final two games of the series at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow and the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on December 17 and 19, respectively.
