Why Is Abhishek Sharma Unavailable for the Match Against Namibia?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 12 (NationPress) India's left-handed opener Abhishek Sharma was not available for selection in their Group A match against Namibia during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday due to his ongoing recovery from an illness.
A report from IANS revealed that Abhishek had been admitted to a private hospital in New Delhi on Monday due to a stomach infection acquired during the match against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Tilak Varma, an India batter, mentioned in the pre-match press conference that Abhishek was discharged on Wednesday and is currently under further observation.
“Abhishek Sharma is still recovering from his illness and was unavailable for selection. The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his recovery,” stated the Board of Control for Cricket in India on its ‘X’ account on Thursday.
With Abhishek out, it opened the opportunity for wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson to take the lead at the top of the order alongside Ishan Kishan.
“Abhishek is not yet well; he will miss a game or two. Sanju steps in, a similar explosive batter,” commented India captain Suryakumar Yadav during the toss, with Namibia opting to bowl first.
Before the match, a visibly lean Abhishek was spotted at the stadium, marking his first public appearance since being dismissed for a golden duck against the USA on February 7.
He did not participate in India’s training sessions on consecutive evenings leading to the clash against Namibia. Although Abhishek was present at the venue, he was not in batting gear, indicating that Samson might open the innings with Ishan Kishan.
In a positive turn for India, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah returned to the playing eleven for his first game of the tournament, replacing Mohammed Siraj, who had taken three wickets against the USA.
