New Delhi, Feb 11 (NationPress) Abhishek Sharma, the left-handed opener for India, is uncertain for the upcoming match against Namibia in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup after being hospitalized in New Delhi due to a stomach infection.

The 25-year-old player missed the training session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday evening and is currently under medical observation. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed during a press conference that Sharma is suffering from a stomach bug.

“Since Monday, Abhishek Sharma has been in a private hospital in New Delhi due to his issues with a stomach infection. The Indian team management will make a decision about his availability for the Thursday match against Namibia based on the doctor’s report,” stated a source close to the situation.

“Further tests have also been conducted, and we are awaiting the results to determine his full recovery timeline and subsequent availability for the game,” the source added.

Sharma participated in India’s opening Group A match against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai despite having a high fever, where he unfortunately scored a duck. Later, he was unable to field in the second innings, as Suryakumar Yadav-led India secured a victory by 29 runs.

The Indian management is likely to exercise caution, especially with a crucial match against Pakistan in Colombo on February 15, followed by a game against Netherlands in Ahmedabad on February 18, leading into the Super Eight stage.

Should Sharma be unavailable, it would pave the way for Sanju Samson to team up with in-form Ishan Kishan at the top of the batting lineup. Although Samson struggled recently as an opener during the 4-1 series victory over New Zealand, he has been practicing extensively with Kishan in preparation.

The Indian team will hold another practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday evening before facing Namibia on Thursday.

Abhishek Sharma's situation is a reminder of the unpredictability of sports, and we must prioritize the athlete's well-being over immediate game needs. The nation stands with our team, hoping for a swift recovery and a strong performance in the upcoming matches.
