Dubai, Sep 25 (NationPress) The family of Abhishek Sharma felt immense pride mixed with emotional turmoil after his unfortunate run-out deprived him of achieving his first international century in India's 41-run victory against Bangladesh during the Super 4 stage of the Men's T20 Asia Cup at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
His sister, Komal Sharma, expressed their feelings, stating they were "a little hurt" by the incident but maintained that "it’s loading, he’s gonna make a century soon."
“It’s part of the game, but yes, today’s run-out was a bit painful. But it’s loading, it’s loading, guys, he’s gonna make a century soon,” Komal Sharma told IANS after the match.
She emphasized that Abhishek always heeds the advice of his mentor, Yuvraj Singh, saying, “As sir would say, we must follow that, and he has to do just that. Yes, of course, he is always there with him, guiding him on everything. He receives instructions before and after the match, discussing what went right and what didn't.”
Komal mentioned that Abhishek regards his mother as his “lucky charm” and emphasized the team's overall performance. “It’s okay, he’s still winning, playing well. It felt really good; the whole team is performing splendidly, and everyone is rooting for him,” she noted.
Looking to the future, she highlighted India’s primary objective: “Ultimately, we just want the trophy to come home, and we wish all the members of Team India the best in securing the trophy.”
On the field, Abhishek delivered an impressive innings of 75 runs off 39 balls, which propelled India to a 41-run victory and secured their spot in the Asia Cup final.
His 75 runs not only bolstered India's chances but also allowed him to surpass his mentor Yuvraj Singh for the most T20I innings by an Indian with five or more sixes. He now has six such innings, behind only Rohit Sharma (13) and Suryakumar Yadav (9). He also set a new Asia Cup record, hitting 17 sixes in the 2025 edition — the most ever in a single tournament across formats.
After being put to bat following Bangladesh’s stand-in captain Jaker Ali winning the toss, India raced to 72/0 in the Power-play, largely thanks to Abhishek and Shubman Gill (29 off 19). The left-hander maintained his dominance until he was spectacularly run out by Rishad Hossain, missing out on a century for the second consecutive match.
India's innings lost momentum following his dismissal. Suryakumar Yadav made only 5 runs, Tilak Varma matched that score, and Shivam Dube contributed just 2 runs. However, Hardik Pandya steadied the innings with 38 runs off 29 balls, while Axar Patel added an unbeaten 10 off 15, leading India to a total of 168/6. Rishad Hossain (2-27) and Tanzim Hasan Sakib (1-29) bowled effectively to contain the Indian middle-order.
Bangladesh’s chase relied heavily on opener Saif Hassan, who scored 69 runs off 51 balls but was dropped three times — by Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, and Sanju Samson. He added 42 runs with Parvez Hossain Emon (21 off 19), but the middle order faltered against India’s spinners. Kuldeep Yadav led the attack with figures of 3-18, Varun Chakravarthy took 2-29, and Jasprit Bumrah made a strong comeback with 2-18. Axar claimed 1-37, while Tilak Varma wrapped up the innings by dismissing Mustafizur Rahman, leading Bangladesh to collapse for 127 runs.
With their fifth consecutive win, India secured a place in the final. Sri Lanka has been eliminated, leaving Bangladesh and Pakistan to compete for the remaining spot in the championship match.
