Mumbai, March 12 (NationPress) Syed Abid Ali, who represented India in 29 Test matches from December 1967 to December 1974 as an all-rounder, sadly passed away at the age of 83 in Tracy, California, as reported by his relative, Reza Khan of the North America Cricket League (NACL) in a social media announcement on Wednesday.

Abid Ali, a lower-order batsman and medium-pace bowler, was a key figure in the Indian cricket squad during the late 1960s and early 1970s, rising to fame from the local cricket grounds of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh.

"It is with deep respect and heartfelt admiration that I announce the passing of Uncle Syed Abid Ali, a cricketing icon from India who made Tracy, California, his home. His remarkable legacy continues to motivate us all towards excellence. He was an integral part of the Indian Cricket Team. Abid Ali made his Test debut against Australia on December 23, 1967, and played his final Test against the West Indies beginning December 15, 1974. Over 29 Tests, he accumulated 1,018 runs at an average of 20.36, including six half-centuries, with a highest score of 81. He also took 47 wickets at an average of 42.12, with his best bowling figures being 6/55.

In addition, he played five One-day Internationals for India, scoring 93 runs with a top score of 70 and taking seven wickets at an average of 26.71.

Abid Ali was a prominent figure in First-Class cricket, amassing 8,732 runs in 212 matches, predominantly for Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy. His record includes 13 centuries and 31 fifties, with a highest score of 173 not out. Additionally, he claimed 397 wickets, achieving five wickets in an innings on 14 occasions.
