Milan, December 30 (NationPress) AC Milan has officially declared the hiring of Sergio Conceicao as the head coach of the club on a contract that extends until June 2026. This announcement comes after the club previously communicated the termination of Paulo Fonseca. The statement on AC Milan's website states, "AC Milan announces that Sergio Paulo Marceneiro da Conceicao has been appointed as the Head Coach of the men's First Team until 30 June 2026. The Club extends a warm welcome to Sergio and his staff, wishing a journey full of success and fulfillment," the club communicated.
The Portuguese manager arrives after a successful period with Porto, a team he joined in 2018 and led to secure three league titles and four Portuguese Cups during a seven-year stint that concluded after the 2023/24 season.
Paulo Fonseca took charge of the first team at the onset of the 2024-25 season, but the team struggled significantly under his leadership. They managed to win just half of the 24 matches during his tenure, currently placing eighth in the Serie A standings, trailing behind rivals Inter Milan, Juventus, and Napoli. The club previously announced, "AC Milan announces that Paulo Fonseca has been relieved from his duties as Head Coach of the Men's First Team. The Club extends its gratitude to Paulo for his great professionalism and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours," on Monday.
After the 1-1 draw against Roma on Monday (IST), Fonseca confirmed to the press that his role as head coach had ended before the club made its official announcement. "Yes, it's true. I'm out. That's life...I did everything I could," Fonseca stated to reporters while lowering his car window.
The Rossoneri are set to face Juventus in the semifinals of the Supercoppa Italiana at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in their next match on Saturday (IST), followed by a league game against Cagliari on January 12.
