New Delhi, Dec 20 (NationPress) As the 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL) approaches, the three-time runners-up Delhi Capitals (DC) are ready to unveil their new captain this Sunday evening.
Previously led by the multiple-time World Cup champion Meg Lanning from Australia, DC faced disappointment in their pursuit of the WPL title in 2023, 2024, and 2025. With Meg now signed by UP Warriorz (UPW) following last month’s mega auction in New Delhi, the team is looking to fill a crucial leadership gap.
Sources from IANS indicate that the contenders for the captaincy include Jemimah Rodrigues, an accomplished Indian batter, and Laura Wolvaardt, the captain of the South African team. “Jemimah has served as DC’s vice-captain for three seasons, while Laura brings significant international leadership experience,” a source informed IANS.
The official announcement of the new captain will be broadcast live on JioHotstar and Star Sports Network channels at 6 PM on Sunday, right before India’s opening T20I match against Sri Lanka at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam. If there are no last-minute changes, it appears DC is poised to appoint an Indian skipper, based on co-owner Parth Jindal’s comments during the mega auction.
“We are quite certain about our desire to have an Indian captain. Depending on our other acquisitions, we have already made our decision. However, we’ll see how it unfolds. Laura could bring valuable leadership qualities to the team, but we are focused on an Indian captain,” Jindal stated at the press conference.
DC is set to kick off their 2026 WPL season against the defending champions, the Mumbai Indians, at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on January 10. This season is notable as it marks the first time WPL will be conducted during the January-February window, with the final scheduled at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on February 5.
