Birmingham, July 7 (NationPress) Following a significant contribution to India's historic victory at Edgbaston, fast bowler Akash Deep expressed his immense pride and stated that this achievement is something he will cherish forever. India claimed a remarkable 336-run victory over England, marking their first Test win at this venue.
Akash delivered a stellar performance with figures of 6-99 as England, chasing a daunting target of 608 runs, collapsed for 271 runs on the final day, securing a vital series-tying win for India. His overall match statistics of 10-147 represent his best performance in a Test career spanning eight matches.
“This is an incredibly proud moment for me. I will forever remember this day. The most significant aspect is that we won the match where I took five wickets. I wouldn’t have felt as fulfilled if the match had ended in a draw. My happiness stems from contributing to the team's victory. I got everything I wished for,” Akash shared in a video on bcci.tv.
His teammate and opening bowler Mohammed Siraj, who took 6-70 in the first innings, referred to the win at Edgbaston as the third-best match of his career. “This is the third most remarkable match I've played for India, following Gabba and Lord’s. It’s hard to express this feeling. I’m thrilled we made such a comeback,” he stated.
“This match was crucial in the series. As players, creating history through our performances, especially from Shubman and Akash, means a lot. While Akash was bowling, I encouraged him to focus on consistency rather than just hunting for wickets. In the first innings, I felt he could take five wickets, and he achieved that in the second innings,” he added.
Vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who scored a pivotal 65 in India’s second innings, expressed his relief that they were able to accomplish what they couldn't at Edgbaston in 2022. “It’s wonderful to have completed the task we left unfinished last time. I’m thrilled we achieved this,” he said.
Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who contributed fifties in both innings and took wickets, congratulated Shubman Gill for securing his first win as Test captain. “It’s a special occasion for Shubman to have won in Edgbaston for the first time. He performed exceptionally well in both innings. Overall, I want to applaud the entire team for their excellent effort leading to this significant victory,” he concluded.
