Cincinnati, Aug 11 (NationPress) Carlos Alcaraz fought hard against World No. 56 Damir Dzumhur, clinching a victory with scores of 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to progress to the third round of the Cincinnati Masters on Monday (IST).
Alcaraz sailed through the opening set in a swift 28 minutes. However, he faced challenges in the second set, as errors began to surface and his intensity waned. This allowed Dzumhur to capitalize, charge the net, and take command of the rallies, ultimately leveling the match.
In the decisive set, the Spaniard managed to regain his composure, showcasing just enough strength and accuracy to secure the win after one hour and 41 minutes.
"It was a true rollercoaster experience. I had many ups and downs, but I’m delighted to have come out on top. I’ll strive to regain my confidence tomorrow, as today was quite challenging," Alcaraz remarked.
"Damir plays intelligent tennis, and I must remain focused and prepared. I have a rest day ahead, which will help me restore my confidence for the next match," he added.
This match marked Alcaraz’s return to competition following his defeat to Jannik Sinner in their recent Lexus ATP Head2Head clash during the Wimbledon final. Both players have qualified for the ATP Finals, where they will vie for the prestigious Year-End No. 1 ranking as the year progresses.
Currently, Alcaraz holds a significant 1,500-point advantage over Sinner in the ATP Live Race To Turin.
In 2025, Alcaraz has already secured five titles, leading the Tour, including Masters 1000 victories in Monte-Carlo and Rome. His best performance in Ohio occurred in 2023, where he finished as runner-up in a thrilling three-set final against Novak Djokovic.
As he aims for his eighth Masters 1000 title, Alcaraz is set to face Hamad Medjedovic next.
