New Delhi, May 23 (NationPress) Angelo Mathews, the former captain of Sri Lanka, has announced his retirement from Test cricket. He plans to play his last match during the opening game of a five-match series against Bangladesh, scheduled to take place in Galle from June 17-21. Over the course of 118 Tests, Mathews has scored 8167 runs at an impressive average of 44.62, while also taking 33 wickets.
“It is time for me to bid farewell to the most treasured format of the game, International Test Cricket! The last 17 years representing Sri Lanka have been my greatest honor and source of pride. There is nothing that compares to the feeling of patriotism and dedication when wearing the National Jersey,” he expressed.
“I have poured my heart and soul into cricket, and in return, cricket has shaped me into the person I am today. I am deeply thankful to the sport and to the thousands of fans of Sri Lanka Cricket who have stood by me during my peaks and valleys,” he continued.
“The upcoming test against Bangladesh in June will mark my final red-ball match for the country. While I step away from the Test format, I have discussed with the selectors my availability for white-ball formats should my country require it,” Mathews shared through his social media channels on Friday.
Having made his Test debut in 2009, Mathews will celebrate his 38th birthday next week. He led Sri Lanka in 34 Tests, including a memorable victory at Headingley in 2014, and is currently the third highest run-scorer in the longer format, following Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.
“I have confidence in this Test team, which boasts numerous current and future stars. It feels like the right moment to allow a younger player the opportunity to step up and shine for our nation,” he stated.
“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to God, my loving parents, my wonderful wife and children, and my family and close friends who have unwaveringly supported me throughout my journey,” he added.
“Additionally, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Sri Lanka Cricket and all the coaches for their constant support throughout my career. A special thanks to my management team for their commitment and hard work over the years. Although this chapter concludes, my passion for the game will always endure,” Mathews concluded.
