Galle, June 21 (NationPress) The legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Matthews has officially ended his journey in Test cricket after the inaugural match against Bangladesh at the Galle International Stadium. Over the course of 119 Tests, Matthews has accumulated an impressive 8241 runs at an average of 44.4, along with taking 33 wickets. As he left the field for the final time in whites, he was honored with a guard of honour from the Bangladesh team.
“Since announcing my retirement, the outpouring of love has truly amazed me. I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who has supported me throughout my career. It has been a challenging journey, filled with both highs and lows, joy and sorrow. However, I managed to persevere thanks to the backing I received,” Matthews shared after the game.
Mathews made his Test debut back in 2009 and has captained the Sri Lankan team in 34 Tests, which includes a memorable victory at Headingley in 2014. He ranks as the third-highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka in the longest format, following Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.
“(Emotional?) Well, absolutely. Retiring from the format that I cherished playing is quite significant. It's now the moment for younger players to take the baton and propel Sri Lanka forward. We have immense young talent in the dressing room. I also want to congratulate Bangladesh for a fantastic Test match,” he added.
Reflecting on his favorite moments during his extensive Test career, Matthews noted, “The victory against England in England and the 3-0 whitewash against Australia in Sri Lanka stand out as monumental highlights for our team. I am thankful to all the players, coaches, and fans for their unwavering support. Your love means everything to me.”
The first Test of the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Galle concluded in a nail-biting draw, characterized by a thrilling final session.
Sri Lanka, aiming for a target of 296 runs in 37 overs, opted for a defensive approach and ended at 72/4, managing to survive a late spin onslaught by Taijul Islam, who claimed 3-23, including crucial wickets of Angelo Matthews—playing his final Test—and Dinesh Chandimal.
