London, July 9 (NationPress) Jofra Archer has been included in England's starting lineup for the third Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, as the home team aims to recover from a significant defeat at Edgbaston. The Sussex fast bowler takes the place of Josh Tongue for the match at Lord’s, commencing on Thursday, July 10.
The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series stands at a tight 1-1 after India's 336-run triumph at Edgbaston on Sunday.
With 13 Tests under his belt, Archer has claimed 42 wickets at an average of 31.04. He made his return to the England Test squad for the first time since February 2021 when he was selected for the second Test against India.
A flare-up of an elbow injury and a stress fracture in his back had kept Archer mostly away from Test cricket since February 2021.
There are numerous uncertainties surrounding the England team after losing to India for the first time at Edgbaston Stadium in the second Test. India maintained dominance throughout the five days in Birmingham, overpowering both English batters and bowlers.
As the pitch at Lord’s is expected to differ from those at Headingley and Edgbaston, Archer’s addition could be crucial for the side led by Ben Stokes.
Josh Tongue, aged 27, makes way for Archer in the playing XI and may feel unfortunate, as he is currently the leading wicket-taker in the series with 11 wickets, surpassing Akash Deep, who solidified his position during the second Test.
Gus Atkinson will be absent from the playing XI after being included in the England squad ahead of the third Test. The 27-year-old has not played since suffering a hamstring injury in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in May.
