Birmingham, June 30 (NationPress) Jofra Archer's anticipation for a return to Test cricket has been prolonged as England has opted to maintain an unchanged playing eleven for the upcoming second Test against India, which kicks off at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

Archer was included in an England Test squad for the first time since 2021; however, the team has decided to continue with the same lineup that successfully clinched the series opener against India at Headingley.

After England's thrilling five-wicket triumph in the first Test at Headingley last week, Archer was summoned to the squad. He has participated in 13 Tests for England, taking 42 wickets at an average of 31.04.

Yet, a recurrence of an elbow injury, coupled with a stress fracture in his back, has kept Archer primarily away from Test matches since February 2021. The 30-year-old also missed England's training session on Monday due to a family emergency, but he is set to rejoin the squad on Tuesday to prepare for the second Test.

In the previous Test at Headingley, England successfully chased down 371 runs to secure a five-wicket victory, even with India boasting five centurions. This win puts England ahead 1-0 in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. Another victory for the Ben Stokes-led team at Edgbaston would put them in a position to clinch the series in the third match at Lord’s, starting on July 10.

England's decision to retain their playing eleven also allows seam-bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes to compete in a Test match at his home ground. Woakes, 36, boasts an impressive record in his three Test appearances at his local venue against Australia, West Indies, and Pakistan.

England's lineup: - Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (wicket-keeper), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir

Point of View

This decision by England demonstrates their commitment to continuity and team cohesion. While Jofra Archer's talent is undeniable, the team's recent success suggests that stability in the playing eleven is paramount. This approach aligns with the broader goal of building a cohesive unit that can tackle future challenges effectively.
