Arshdeep Singh Penalized for ICC Code of Conduct Violation Post T20 World Cup Victory
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dubai, March 10 (NationPress) Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has been penalized 15% of his match fee due to a breach of Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Arshdeep was found in violation of Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This provision pertains to “throwing a ball (or any other cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
Additionally, a demerit point has been added to Arshdeep’s disciplinary record, marking his first violation within a 24-month timeframe.
The incident transpired off the fifth delivery of the 11th over, with New Zealand already struggling. They were chasing a daunting target of 256 and were at 102/5 at that moment. Mitchell appeared visibly upset after Arshdeep calmly walked away after making contact.
Arshdeep accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thus eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
The on-field officials, including umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, along with third umpire Allahuddien Paleker and fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock, issued the charge.
Level 1 infractions carry penalties ranging from a formal reprimand to a fine of up to 50% of a player’s match fee, in addition to one or two demerit points.
“I can apologize as much as I want, but I truly am sorry,” Arshdeep was heard telling Mitchell in a video shared by the BlackCaps, before they shook hands and shared a laugh.
During an interview with broadcasters after India’s victory lap, Arshdeep explained his brief departure saying, “I just went to apologize to Mitchell. My throw unexpectedly reversed and hit him, so I wanted to express my regret. It was unintentional,” said Arshdeep.
