New Delhi, Dec 28 (NationPress) Australian allrounder Ashleigh Gardner has expressed her readiness to embrace the captaincy role for Australia, should the opportunity arise, although she never imagined herself in such a position.
In the last year, Gardner has made considerable strides in her leadership journey, taking on captaincy responsibilities in three different T20 leagues across the globe. As the new year kicks off, she will head to India to again lead the Gujarat Giants in the Women's Premier League (WPL).
She took over the captaincy from fellow Australian teammate Beth Mooney last season, guiding the team to their inaugural playoff appearance. Subsequently, she received another leadership opportunity in the UK when England's captain Natalie Sciver-Brunt stepped back, allowing Gardner to lead the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, where they secured a spot in the top four.
This experience bolstered her confidence to pursue the captaincy role with the Sydney Sixers, where she succeeded Ellyse Perry as the captain for WBBL 11.
"Yeah, I guess so. If I got asked to do it, great," Gardner told cricket.com.au when queried about her interest in leading Australia after Alyssa Healy steps down. "You can lead without actually having the 'c' next to your name. That's something I've really tried to do recently, particularly within the spin group.
"(I have) really tried to lead that pack. I've been there the longest, so I’m making sure to share knowledge where I can, but also just exchanging ideas with each other. I believe cricket is such an individual sport within a team context, and it’s crucial to leverage the talents around you,” she added.
While 22-year-old Phoebe Litchfield is frequently mentioned by former players and analysts, current vice-captain Tahlia McGrath also remains a strong contender for the position.
Over the past 14 months, McGrath has often stepped in as the captain during Healy's absence, while Gardner acted as her official deputy during the T20 series in New Zealand in March.
Currently, Gardner leads every franchise team she represents. Her esteemed leadership reputation is evidenced by the fact that two national captains play under her in their respective leagues: Healy in the WBBL and Sciver-Brunt at The Hundred.
