Why Are Restrictions Only Imposed on Bowlers? Ashwin Speaks on Usman Tariq's Bowling Action Amid Criticism
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 11 (NationPress) Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his support for Pakistan's Usman Tariq following scrutiny of the latter's bowling action during the T20 World Cup 2026. Ashwin raised a crucial question: "Why are the restrictions only imposed on bowlers?"
Tariq showcased impressive figures of 3-27 in Pakistan’s Group A victory against the USA on Tuesday, marking his team's second win in the tournament. However, despite this stellar performance, discussions soon shifted to his bowling action, igniting a debate.
Characterized by a noticeable bend in his arm and an unorthodox run-up, Tariq has encountered inquiries regarding the legality of his action and whether it would withstand international evaluations, including in premier T20 leagues. During a recent bilateral series against Australia, all-rounder Cameron Green also expressed concerns regarding the spinner’s action.
On Wednesday, former Indian cricketer Shreevats Goswami criticized Tariq's pause in his run-up, likening it to a football rule change that prohibits players from pausing during a penalty run-up.
"Even football doesn’t permit players to pause during a penalty run-up anymore. How is this acceptable? The action is fine, but the pause is questionable. This can’t be taken lightly!" Goswami commented on X.
In response to these criticisms, Ashwin challenged the notion that bowlers face stricter regulations compared to batters.
"I agree with the football rule! While batters can switch-hit or reverse without informing the umpire or the bowler, why should bowlers be the only ones restricted? Moreover, bowlers can’t change their bowling arm without notifying the umpire! They should amend that rule first," Ashwin stated.
As discussions heated up on social media, with some users criticizing Ashwin’s viewpoint, the seasoned off-spinner clarified that only formal testing can ascertain the legality of Tariq’s action.
"To be crystal clear, the legality of his action can only be verified at an ICC bowling action testing facility. Additionally, there’s a 15-degree rule requiring bowlers to keep their elbows straight, which the on-field umpires cannot accurately judge. The solution is to implement a real-time, in-competition testing tool. Accusing someone of exploiting grey areas is unjust. Lastly, I believe that his pause at the crease is completely legal as it is part of his regular action."
