Concerns Rise Over Gaikwad's Batting Performance: Ashwin's Insight
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 19 (NationPress) Former Indian off-spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his worries regarding the batting struggles of Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Chennai Super Kings captain, indicating that the right-handed batsman is facing significant pressure and grappling with a cluttered mind.
Gaikwad, who has been a consistent performer in both domestic and franchise cricket, is currently experiencing a downturn. In the six matches played thus far, the CSK captain has managed to accumulate only 82 runs, with a top score of 28. During the recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where CSK lost by 10 runs, he was out for 19 off 13 deliveries.
While analyzing the 29-year-old's latest dismissal, Ashwin observed that the match context offered an ideal opportunity for Gaikwad to establish himself without the pressure of the required run rate, aided by a strong start from his batting partner Ayush Mhatre.
"This was the perfect moment for him to score runs. There was no need for him to take risks or maintain a fast scoring rate due to Ayush Mhatre's explosive start. They were scoring freely in the Powerplay, allowing Ruturaj to take his time, accumulate runs, and regain his form," Ashwin commented on JioStar.
"After Ayush Mhatre's wicket, Ruturaj faced a quality delivery; it's tough to beat him on the pull shot. I believe he is under substantial pressure, and his mind seems to be a bit cluttered," he added.
In their innings, SRH posted a score of 194/9. CSK's bowlers Anshul Kamboj and Jamie Overton each took three wickets. In response, Mhatre spearheaded CSK's chase with a rapid 30 off just 13 balls, showcasing his skill in the third over by hitting a six and four boundaries off Praful Hinge.
Despite contributions from players like Matthew Short (34), Sarfaraz Khan (25), and Shivam Dube (21), CSK fell short, finishing at 184/8.
