Ashwin Supports Gaikwad: A Path to IPL 2026 Redemption?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) Former Chennai Super Kings spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his unwavering support for captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, sharing his belief that the opener will soon find his form with the bat in IPL 2026. This comes after Gaikwad led his team to a second consecutive victory against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday.
Despite Gaikwad facing challenges this season, Ashwin indicated that the recent wins as captain could alleviate some pressure and help him acclimate to the tournament.
"Having secured a couple of wins as a captain should greatly assist him in settling into this tournament. Honestly, if I were in the dugout or if I were Ruturaj Gaikwad, I wouldn’t feel too stressed. In T20 cricket, maintaining intent is crucial; there's just one small adjustment I would suggest," Ashwin stated during an interview with JioStar.
Ashwin highlighted a minor technical tweak, contrasting Gaikwad’s batting style with those of other successful players.
"When you observe Ayush Mhatre or Sanju Samson, they’ve made the right decisions by playing straight. In contrast, Ruturaj has been attempting to play across the line more often and has been getting caught early. It would benefit him to take a more measured approach at the beginning of his innings, focus on timing the ball, and play more along the ground," he explained.
While voicing confidence in Gaikwad’s potential resurgence, Ashwin also addressed the KKR, who have been struggling to build momentum early in the season. He warned against expecting quick fixes from individual players and emphasized the necessity for a team-wide improvement.
"One cannot expect Pathirana to join the tournament and instantly turn things around. But consider this: back in 2021, KKR was in a tough spot. The tournament had to be paused, yet they returned, achieved consistent wins, and gained momentum. What was the catalyst? Fresh energy from someone like Venkatesh Iyer," he noted.
Drawing parallels with that season, Ashwin stressed the importance of introducing new energy into the lineup, suggesting that underutilized squad members could play a pivotal role.
"They have players like Tejasvi Dahiya on the bench, and Saurabh Dubey, the left-arm quick, who bring freshness to the squad. Perhaps someone like that coming in could boost their chances. However, this year will not be straightforward for KKR," he concluded.
