Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya held a high-level meeting with Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Director General and World Aquatics President Capt. Husain Al-Musallam on the sidelines of the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 in Nagoya, Japan, on 19 September 2026. The talks centred on deepening sporting cooperation between India's national federations and their Asian counterparts, with a particular focus on developing aquatic disciplines at the grassroots level.

Key Discussions and Outcomes

According to the Minister, the agenda covered two broad priorities: strengthening institutional linkages between India's National Sports Federations and their corresponding Asian bodies, and charting a roadmap for the growth of aquatic sports in India. The OCA expressed support for India's stated readiness to host a range of Asian-level championships, signalling confidence in the country's hosting infrastructure and administrative capacity.

'We discussed strengthening cooperation between India's National Sports Federations and their respective Asian federations and explored ways to further develop aquatic sports in India, with a focus on grassroots participation and nurturing young talent,' Mandaviya wrote on X, sharing details of the bilateral engagement.

India's Presence at Nagoya

Minister Mandaviya is leading India's official delegation at the Games, where Indian athletes are competing across multiple sporting disciplines. He also attended the official welcome reception alongside Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, a former Olympian and one of India's most celebrated track-and-field icons. The Asian Games were officially inaugurated at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya.

Reflecting on the ceremonial opening, Mandaviya described attending the Opening Ceremony and participating in Kagami-biraki — a traditional Japanese celebration — as a memorable experience. 'Grateful for the warm reception and gracious hospitality,' he noted, adding that he found 'how excited everybody is about India's sporting progress and its future' particularly heartening.

OCA Executive Board Meets in Nagoya

On the sidelines of the Games, OCA President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani chaired the 110th OCA Executive Board meeting, which reviewed preparations for a series of upcoming continental events. These include the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games Riyadh 2026, the Asian Beach Games Cebu 2028, and the Asian Winter Games Almaty 2029.
