Australian Open: Swiatek Reflects on Challenging First Round Win

Melbourne, Jan 13 (NationPress) Second seed Iga Swiatek kicked off her Australian Open journey with a tough first-round win on Monday, defeating Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic with a score of 6-3, 6-4 in a match that lasted one hour and 21 minutes.
This victory maintained Swiatek’s flawless record in first-round matches at this prestigious tournament.
Against the 28-year-old Siniakova, who has won nine Grand Slam doubles titles, Swiatek depended on a strong first serve to clinch her win. The Polish player achieved 71 percent of her first serves with an average speed of 168 km/h, winning 79 percent of those points. In contrast, Siniakova, ranked No. 50, only secured 60 percent of her first serves and won 56 percent of those points.
Although Siniakova managed to hit two more winners than Swiatek, she also made eight more unforced errors.
"For sure it wasn't an easy first round, so I'm happy that I'm through," Swiatek stated after the match. "She was playing really well, and I just needed to be more proactive, and in the second set I did that, so I was happy."
The first set saw both competitors holding serve for the initial five games until Swiatek broke to take a 5-3 lead and served out the set. She carried the momentum into the second set, jumping to a 2-0 lead. However, Siniakova battled back to lead 3-2 before Swiatek raised her game to finish the match.
Securing a sixth Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park would enable Swiatek to regain the No. 1 ranking, which she previously held for 75 consecutive weeks from 2022 to 2023 and again until October 2024.
Swiatek is set to face Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova in the second round, while Siniakova will now turn her attention to the women’s doubles, where she and Taylor Townsend of the United States are the top seeds.
