Lahore, June 30 (NationPress) As Pakistan gears up for the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has been appointed as the acting red-ball head coach, a role he will hold until his current contract concludes.
After the departure of Jason Gillespie as the red-ball head coach late last year, Aaqib Javed briefly stepped in. Now, Mahmood, aged 50, takes over following an extensive tenure as Pakistan’s bowling coach and subsequently as assistant head coach.
“His extensive game knowledge, paired with practical international experience and notable success in the English county circuit, makes him exceptionally qualified for this role,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) stated.
“His red-ball credentials are highlighted by two County Championship titles, showcasing his leadership, tactical insight, and relentless pursuit of excellence. The PCB is optimistic that under Mahmood's leadership, the red-ball squad will continue to evolve in strength, discipline, and performance on the international stage,” they added in a statement.
Mahmood's inaugural task as the red-ball coach will be to prepare the team for a two-match home series against current WTC champions South Africa, scheduled for later this year. During the 2023-25 WTC cycle, Pakistan ended up at the bottom of the standings with a 27.98 points percentage, having won five Tests and lost nine.
Mahmood has played a total of 21 Tests and 143 ODIs for Pakistan and was part of the squad that finished as runners-up in the 1999 Men’s ODI World Cup, retiring from international cricket in 2007. He served as Pakistan’s bowling coach from 2016 to 2019 before resuming his role with the national side in April 2024.
He also took charge as head coach during the team’s tour to New Zealand for a T20I series in April 2024. Additionally, Mahmood has worked as a bowling coach for Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), alongside his role as head coach of Islamabad United.
