New Delhi, Aug 20 (NationPress) England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook has praised emerging fast bowler Sonny Baker for his remarkable skills in challenging top players, consistently taking wickets, and even achieving hat-tricks. Baker appears ready to make his international cricket debut against South Africa.
Baker, just 22 years old, has received his first ODI call-up for England’s upcoming home series against South Africa, set for September 2, 4, and 7. His selection follows an impressive performance in The Hundred, where he notably took a hat-trick while playing for Manchester Originals against Brook’s Northern Superchargers.
He dismissed Dawid Malan with a clever slower ball and secured two late wickets, adding to a stellar season that has also seen him dismiss seasoned England players Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root, along with troubling experienced Australian batsmen David Warner and Steve Smith.
"There’s clearly a reason we selected him. He bowls with impressive speed, showcases skill, and has made a mark against various international athletes, such as Kane Williamson, Warner, Smith, and Bairstow. He has successfully pressured them during the powerplay, which is something we eagerly anticipate seeing more of in the future. He possesses the talent to secure wickets and accomplish hat-tricks," Brook stated, as reported by Sky Sports.
Also making waves is leg-spin bowling all-rounder Rehan Ahmed, who has been included in both ODI and T20 squads for the series against South Africa. "He’s an exceptional talent and has elevated his game this year with the bat. I’m pleased he’s batting in the top three for Rockets as well," added Brook.
"He has been given valuable opportunities and has risen to the occasion. His skills with the ball and in the field are qualities we seek. He embodies all three attributes to become a remarkable player," Brook further remarked.
Brook will be taking a break during the three-match T20I series in Ireland, scheduled for September, allowing Jacob Bethell to step in and become England’s youngest international men’s captain at just 21.
"Beth has tremendous potential as a future captain. He has a keen understanding of the game and constantly strives to advance it, much like I do. We share a similar mindset. I believe he will be an assertive captain, always looking to put pressure on opposing batters and bowlers, which is precisely what we have asked for, and he does it exceptionally well," concluded Brook.
