New Delhi, Aug 20 (NationPress) England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook has praised young fast bowler Sonny Baker for his talent in challenging elite players, securing numerous wickets, and achieving hat-tricks, as he gears up for a potential international debut against South Africa.

Baker, at just 22 years old, has received his first ODI call-up for England’s upcoming home series against South Africa, scheduled for September 2, 4, and 7. His selection follows an impressive performance in The Hundred, where he executed a hat-trick while playing for Manchester Originals against Brook’s team, the Northern Superchargers.

He dismissed Dawid Malan with a cleverly disguised slower delivery before striking twice at the end of the innings, contributing to a remarkable season that has seen him take down experienced players like Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root, and challenge renowned Australian batsmen David Warner and Steve Smith.

"There’s a clear reason for his selection. He bowls at considerable speed, possesses skill, and has truly impressed against various international players such as Kane Williamson, Warner, Smith, and Bairstow. He has successfully pressured them during the powerplay, and we eagerly anticipate seeing him in action in the future. He certainly has the capability to take wickets and achieve hat-tricks," Brook stated to Sky Sports.

Also included in both the ODI and T20 squads for the matches against South Africa is leg-spin bowling all-rounder Rehan Ahmed. "He is an exceptional talent and has elevated his game this year with the bat. I’m pleased to see him batting at the top of the order for the Rockets as well," he added.

"He has been granted valuable opportunities and has met the challenge admirably. His skills with the ball, along with his fielding, are exactly what we seek. He possesses all the key attributes to become a top player," Brook remarked.

Brook will take a break during the three-match T20I series in Ireland, set for September, with Jacob Bethell stepping in as the youngest international men’s captain for England at just 21.

"Beth has significant potential to lead in the future. He has a keen understanding of the game and is always looking for ways to advance it, similar to how I think. I believe he will be an assertive captain, consistently aiming to put pressure on opposing batters and bowlers. That’s exactly what we desire, and he excels at it," Brook concluded.
