IPL 2026: Balaji Raises Concerns on LSG's Overreliance on Foreign Batsmen
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 22 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Lakshmipathy Balaji has expressed worries regarding Lucknow Super Giants’ overreliance on their overseas batsmen at the top order. He believes that Indian players such as Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad, and team captain Rishabh Pant could shoulder more responsibility in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, which kicks off on March 28.
After finishing a disappointing seventh in the 2025 season, the team led by Pant hopes to secure their first title. Lucknow has made minimal changes to their roster during the mini-auction, primarily investing in young talents like Arjun Tendulkar. Additionally, they targeted overseas players Josh Inglis and Matthew Breetzke.
"The top order, featuring Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Pooran, is quite formidable. They have provided strong starts and outperformed their opponents on several occasions last season. However, concerns remain regarding the bowling, captaincy, and the overall tactical approach of the leadership group. They seem to be heavily reliant on their trio of overseas batsmen," Balaji stated during an interview with Jio Hotstar.
"Players like Badoni, Samad, and Shahbaz Ahmed can certainly contribute. However, it’s crucial for the top order and Rishabh Pant to carry the team forward. Typically, I would choose three batsmen for the overseas lineup, so the primary players—Marsh, Markram, and Pooran—will definitely be included," he added.
Balaji further noted that if Hasaranga is fit, he would be the preferred choice for an overseas bowler. Otherwise, Anrich Nortje could step in for the time being.
"It’s essential to bolster the bowling lineup with an overseas fast bowler, as we still don’t know if Hasaranga will be in top shape. If he isn’t, I would opt for Anrich Nortje as the fourth overseas player," he remarked.
As per the 20-match schedule released by the BCCI, LSG will commence their IPL 2026 journey against Delhi Capitals at their home ground, Ekana Stadium, on April 1.
