Bavuma Highlights South Africa's Ambition for WTC Final

New Delhi, Dec 19 (NationPress) South Africa's skipper Temba Bavuma expressed that his squad is highly motivated to qualify for their first-ever World Test Championship Final, scheduled to take place at Lord's in June next year.

Currently, South Africa is leading the standings in the ongoing cycle with a 63.33 PCT, ahead of their upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan, starting with the Boxing Day match on December 26 at SuperSport Park in Centurion. The second Test will follow at Newlands in Cape Town, beginning on January 3.

Following their 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka, South Africa must secure at least one win in their two Tests against Pakistan to guarantee their place in the WTC Final. "The World Test Championship; it’s akin to a World Cup for red-ball players. We have definitely focused our ambitions on reaching that final," Bavuma stated.

"We’ve positioned ourselves well for this opportunity and are quite close to achieving it. Our team has delivered commendable performances. We aim to maintain this momentum. This championship holds significant importance for cricket globally," Bavuma added as reported by the ICC.

Other contenders for the final include the reigning champions Australia (58.89 PCT) and two-time runners-up India (55.88 PCT), currently in second and third place in the points table, respectively.

With the current WTC cycle nearing an exciting finish, Bavuma, a right-handed batsman, underscored the exceptional nature of Test cricket.

"From a skill perspective, Test cricket has always been our aspiration as players. You want to prove yourself in challenging scenarios, where your abilities are tested over extended periods. Test cricket is regarded as the purest form of the game, and there's a reason for that," he concluded.
