Munich, July 29 (NationPress) FC Bayern Munich has officially confirmed a one-year contract extension with goalkeeper Sven Ulreich extending his stay until the summer of 2026.
The 36-year-old shot-stopper joined Bayern from VfB Stuttgart in 2015, following a commendable 222 appearances with his previous club. While primarily serving as a backup to Manuel Neuer, renowned for revolutionizing the goalkeeper position with his proactive style, Ulreich’s tenure with the Bavarian club has been filled with memorable moments.
He has made the second goalkeeper role his own, proving to be an invaluable team player. Ulreich's chance to showcase his skills arose during the 2017-18 season when Neuer suffered a metatarsal fracture. During that season, Ulreich made 29 Bundesliga appearances, achieving 12 clean sheets, which significantly contributed to Bayern securing the title for the sixth consecutive year.
In 2020, he spent a season at Hamburger SV before returning to the German giants.
To date, Ulreich has participated in 103 competitive matches for FC Bayern, amassing an impressive list of accolades: nine Bundesliga titles, three DFB Cup victories, six DFL Supercups, and one each of the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup.
Currently, Bayern has loaned out goalkeepers Daniel Peretz and Alexander Nubel. Although Neuer remains the first-choice keeper, Jonas Urbig is expected to serve as the backup, with Ulreich positioned as the third-choice goalkeeper.
Reports indicate that Ulreich considered retirement and transitioning into a different role within the club. However, both parties decided to extend their collaboration for another year.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sports, stated, "Sven Ulreich embodies reliability: he consistently delivers on his promises - truly. Players like him are essential for any team. We’re thrilled he will remain with us for another season."
