Why Did BCB Ban Women’s Selector Monjurul Islam Over Sexual Harassment Allegations by Jahanara Alam?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 22 (NationPress) The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially prohibited former cricketer Monjurul Islam from engaging in any direct or indirect cricket activities under its purview following an investigation into allegations of misconduct.
This decision, made public after a board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday, stems from the findings of an Independent Inquiry Committee that looked into a complaint lodged by former captain of the Bangladesh women’s team, Jahanara Alam. She had accused Monjurul of sexual assault during the 2022 World Cup.
The BCB stated that the inquiry examined four allegations brought forth by Alam. Although two claims could not be verified due to a lack of evidence, the committee found prima facie evidence of inappropriate behavior in the other two allegations.
Monjurul, who previously held roles as selector and manager of the women’s team, was under contract with the BCB until June 30, 2025. The committee noted that his conduct failed to meet professional standards and fell under the definitions of misconduct and harassment as per relevant Supreme Court guidelines.
“Following the findings of the Independent Inquiry Committee established by the BCB to investigate the complaint from former Bangladesh Women's National Team Captain Jahanara Alam, the Board has resolved to impose a ban on former national cricketer Monjurul Islam from all direct or indirect employment and/or cricket-related activities within the jurisdiction of the BCB,” the board confirmed, validating the allegations.
“The BCB is currently reviewing the Committee's recommendations and may undertake additional measures as necessary based on the report,” the board’s statement added.
Furthermore, the board has approved the schedule for the inaugural edition of the Women's Bangladesh Premier League, slated to take place from April 4 to 14, 2026, in Dhaka and Chattogram.
The BCB also announced a one-month extension for national selection panel chairman Gazi Ashraf Hossain, whose term was set to conclude on February 28. This extension will provide the board with the necessary time to select his successor and restructure the selection panel.
“Considering his intention to resign at the end of his term as Chairman of the National Selection Panel, the Board has decided to grant a one-month extension to Gazi Ashraf Hossain. During this period, the Board will focus on identifying his successor and reorganizing the panel,” the BCB stated.
