Will BCB Chief Animul Islam Attend the India vs Pakistan Match in Colombo?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 12 (NationPress) The chief of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Animul Islam, has announced his plans to travel to Colombo on February 15 to witness the thrilling T20 World Cup 2026 match between fierce rivals India and Pakistan at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Thursday.
Islam has also revealed that delegates from all five prominent Asian teams—India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka—will be in attendance for discussions.
In an interview with the Bangladesh publication Pratham Alo, he mentioned that the invitation for this match was extended by the ICC as part of a larger initiative to unite all stakeholders.
“The ICC has taken the initiative. The key stakeholders are these five Asian nations. For the pivotal India-Pakistan World Cup contest on the 15th, they want representatives from all five teams to gather at the venue, enjoy the match, and engage in dialogue,” he stated.
This development follows a period of strained relations between the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) and the BCB, triggered by the BCCI's request for the release of Mustafizur Rahman from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the IPL. In response, the BCB urged the ICC to relocate matches from India to Sri Lanka, though this request was denied, resulting in Scotland taking Bangladesh's place in the multinational tournament.
However, positive dialogues ensued between the ICC and BCB after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) opted to boycott the match against India to show solidarity with Bangladesh's exclusion from the tournament.
Following these discussions, the ICC decided against penalizing Bangladesh for its non-compliance with the T20 World Cup schedule, while Pakistan agreed to proceed with their match against India.
Furthermore, it was agreed that Bangladesh would host a future ICC event between 2028 and 2031, which Animul anticipates will be the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup in 2028.
Islam shared that the board will draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure these commitments are honored.
“We will formalize an agreement. This will be a detailed MoU to eliminate any uncertainty,” said Islam. “Previously, during the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Annual General Meeting in Dhaka, a similar situation arose. We prepared a similar MoU to prevent any deviation from the contract,” he added.
