New Delhi, Jan 26 (NationPress) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed profound sadness on Sunday following the passing of former BCCI President Inderjit Singh Bindra, who left us at the age of 84 in New Delhi.

A key player in the realm of Indian cricket governance, Bindra's foresight and leadership were instrumental in molding the direction of the sport in India and elevating the nation's status globally. His dedication to cricket administration spanned over 40 years, during which he distinguished himself at both national and state levels.

As BCCI president from 1993 to 1996, Bindra was pivotal in reinforcing India’s status within the international cricket community.

He also held the presidency of the Punjab Cricket Association from 1978 until 2014, where his emphasis on developing infrastructure and grassroots initiatives created a lasting impact. In honor of his remarkable contributions, the PCA Stadium in Mohali was renamed the I.S. Bindra Stadium in 2015.

Bindra, alongside late BCCI presidents N.K.P. Salve and Jagmohan Dalmiya, was crucial in securing the 1987 ICC Cricket World Cup for the subcontinent, marking the inaugural hosting of the tournament outside England.

The Dalmiya-Bindra partnership further solidified India's role in hosting the 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup, reinforcing the nation’s significance in world cricket.

Together, they laid the groundwork for the commercial evolution of Indian cricket, unlocking the potential of broadcasting rights during the emergence of satellite television, significantly altering the media landscape.

BCCI President Mithun Manhas referred to Bindra as a visionary leader who played a vital role in shaping India’s image in global cricket and establishing lasting institutions for the sport.

“I.S. Bindra was a visionary administrator whose leadership transformed India’s role in world cricket. His contributions transcended governance, as he built systems and institutions that continue to support players, administrators, and the game itself. The BCCI mourns the loss of a true pillar of Indian cricket administration,” he stated in a release on Sunday.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia noted that Indian cricket had lost one of its most influential architects, extending condolences to Bindra’s family and the broader cricketing community.

“Indian cricket has lost one of its most influential architects. Bindra’s dedication to the sport, his administrative insight, and his passion for developing lasting infrastructure have left a legacy that will be honored across the cricketing community. On behalf of the BCCI, I offer our deepest sympathies to Bindra’s family, friends, and the entire cricket fraternity during this time of great loss,” he mentioned.

BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla emphasized Bindra’s contributions to strengthening Indian cricket financially through effective governance and innovative commercial strategies.

“Bindra had a clear vision for achieving financial sustainability in Indian cricket. His focus on robust governance and strategic commercial frameworks helped establish a solid foundation for the sport’s long-term growth. He set high standards for administrators with a forward-thinking approach that continues to yield benefits,” he remarked.

BCCI Joint Secretary Prabhtej Bhatia highlighted Bindra’s commitment to establishing strong systems throughout all levels of the game.

“I.S. Bindra’s influence on Indian cricket extended far beyond his official roles. He championed the creation of robust systems from the grassroots to the elite level, and his initiatives continue to influence how the game is governed and experienced throughout the country,” said the Joint Secretary.

BCCI Treasurer A. Raghuram Bhat reminisced about Bindra’s focus on professionalism, balance, and high standards in administration.

“I.S. Bindra brought clarity, balance, and a steady approach to every role he undertook. His legacy is not solely in the achievements reached but in the professional standards he helped instill in Indian cricket. These values continue to guide the administration of the game at every level,” A. Raghuram concluded.
