Chennai, Feb 27 (NationPress) - The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Devajit Saikia, has extended heartfelt condolences to left-handed batsman Rinku Singh and his family following the passing of his father, Khanchand Singh, who succumbed to a long battle with liver cancer.
Rinku, a member of India's T20 World Cup team, departed Chennai at 5:00 a.m. to head to New Delhi and is currently believed to be en route to his hometown, Aligarh, to attend his father's last rites.
Saikia confirmed that Rinku will not be joining the team for their upcoming Super Eights match against the West Indies, scheduled for Sunday.
“On behalf of BCCI, I would like to express my deepest condolences to Rinku Singh and his family during this challenging time. He left for Delhi from Chennai at 5 a.m. to be with his father, who was hospitalized in Greater Noida,” stated Saikia to IANS.
Khanchand was admitted to Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida on February 21 after his condition significantly worsened. He had been placed on ventilator support before passing away early Friday morning.
Rinku had been at his father's side during his deteriorating health but rejoined the team prior to India's match against Zimbabwe at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday, although he did not play as Sanju Samson was selected to open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma.
Defending champions India are set to face the West Indies in a crucial match on Sunday, with a spot in the semi-finals at stake. The winner will advance alongside South Africa from Group 1.
