Key Takeaways
Chennai, February 27 (NationPress) - Devajit Saikia, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), extended heartfelt condolences to left-handed batsman Rinku Singh and his family following the passing of his father, Khanchand Singh, who succumbed to a lengthy fight against liver cancer.
Rinku, a member of India’s T20 World Cup squad, departed from Chennai at 5:00 AM to head to New Delhi and is currently en route to his hometown Aligarh to attend his father's last rites.
Saikia further confirmed that Rinku will not be accompanying the team to Kolkata for their upcoming Super Eights match against the West Indies, scheduled for Sunday.
“On behalf of the BCCI, I would like to convey my deepest sympathies to Rinku Singh and his family during this difficult time. He left for Delhi from Chennai at 5 AM to be with his father at the hospital in Greater Noida,” stated Saikia.
“Thus, he will be absent from the Indian squad's flight to Kolkata this afternoon. We will provide updates on Rinku as we receive them,” he added in a statement to IANS.
Khanchand was admitted to Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida on February 21 after his health deteriorated. He was placed on ventilator support before passing away in the early hours of Friday.
Rinku had been with his father during his critical condition but rejoined the team before India's match against Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday, though he did not play, as Sanju Samson was selected to open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma.
The defending champions, India, are set to face the West Indies in a crucial knockout match on Sunday, where a semi-final spot is at stake. The winner will advance to the semi-finals alongside South Africa from Group 1.
