Mumbai, March 3 (NationPress): India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, commended Rinku Singh for his remarkable resilience by rejoining the squad just a day after the passing of his father. Gambhir emphasized that the entire team stands in solidarity with Rinku during this challenging period.
Gambhir shared these sentiments during 'the speech' preceding India's T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final showdown against England, scheduled at the legendary Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. He began the address with a heartfelt message directed towards Rinku.
“Before I commence, Rinku, your strength to join the team at this moment is commendable. Always remember, you are not alone. The whole team is right here beside you, so stay strong,” Gambhir expressed in a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Rinku's father, Khanchand, passed away on Friday following a prolonged struggle with liver cancer. He had been admitted to Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida on February 21 due to a serious condition and was on ventilator support prior to his death early Friday morning.
Upon receiving the news, Rinku temporarily departed the team to support his family and carry out the last rites. He later rejoined the squad ahead of the Super 8 match against the West Indies on Sunday.
Nonetheless, he was not part of the playing XI for that particular match, with Sanju Samson retaining his position in the lineup. Rinku also missed the earlier encounter against Zimbabwe.
Having been added to India's World Cup roster at the last minute, Rinku has faced challenges with his performance in the tournament, accumulating only 24 runs across five innings, including a duck against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
His record against England is also modest; in three outings against the team led by Harry Brook, he has managed to score 39 runs in three innings, with five fours and one six.
