Brentford, May 18 (NationPress) Defender Ben Mee is set to depart Brentford following the expiration of his contract on June 30, as confirmed by the Premier League on Sunday. Since joining the Bees on a free transfer in July 2022, he has made 67 appearances and netted five goals.
“Sunday will mark my final game at the Gtech. I want to extend my gratitude to the Bees fans for the incredible support over the past three years – it has truly meant a lot,” Mee stated.
“This club is exceptional, filled with wonderful people, and I am both proud and thankful to have played here. I believe I still have much to contribute on the field, and I am eager to do so next season and beyond. For now, let’s aim for a strong conclusion to this season,” he continued.
After Burnley was relegated to the Championship, Mee transitioned to Brentford in July 2022, ending a decade-long stint in Lancashire.
The centre-back celebrated his home debut with a goal in a stunning 4-0 victory over Manchester United at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Mee was instrumental, missing only one match as the Bees finished the Premier League season in ninth place. He was honored as Brentford Supporters' 2023/23 Player of the Year for his remarkable performances.
Having made 18 appearances last season, he scored in victories against Luton Town and Nottingham Forest.
This season, he has featured in 11 matches, starting in every round of the Carabao Cup. Brentford faced a 3-1 defeat against eventual champions Newcastle United in the quarter-finals.
“Ben has been outstanding for us. His first season was remarkable; he was key in us finishing ninth in the Premier League. Although he hasn’t had as many minutes in the subsequent two seasons, he has always stepped up when needed and has been invaluable off the pitch,” remarked head coach Thomas Frank.
“He has played a significant role in cultivating a strong culture and has shared his expertise with younger players about excelling as top defenders. Ben is both a top professional and an exceptional person – we will miss him. We wish him all the best for the future,” he added.
