  • KSCA has formally requested BCCI for the fixture.
  • Safety measures have been put in place at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
  • The date for the match will be confirmed shortly.
  • Discussions are ongoing for a new cricket stadium in Mysuru.

Mysuru, Dec 16 (NationPress) It appears that Bengaluru is in the running to host the inaugural match of the current season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), as the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has officially approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to facilitate this prestigious event in the city.

On December 12, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar declared that cricket matches would resume at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, implementing necessary safety protocols.

"We have permitted cricket matches at the stadium, ensuring all precautions are taken to safeguard the public and uphold Bengaluru's esteemed reputation," Shivakumar remarked.

While addressing the media in Mysuru on Tuesday, KSCA President and former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad confirmed that discussions regarding hosting the IPL opener in Bengaluru had already taken place with the BCCI.

Prasad mentioned that the BCCI is actively contemplating the proposal.

Typically, the IPL's opening match occurs at the home ground of the previous season's champion team.

However, Prasad elaborated that certain complications during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations had previously caused confusion.

Following the KSCA elections, he noted that the cricket association engaged with the state government to ensure the smooth execution of matches.

"The Chief Minister (Siddaramaiah) and Deputy Chief Minister (D.K. Shivakumar) have both provided their approval for hosting the tournament. I have also contacted the Home Minister to discuss arrangements. The date for this year's IPL opening match will soon be confirmed," Prasad stated.

He assured that Bengaluru would continue to be the venue for IPL, international matches, and games across various formats.

Additionally, Prasad mentioned that star cricketer Virat Kohli is expected to visit Bengaluru for the Vijay Hazare Trophy matches.

With three stadiums in Bengaluru, including the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the venue for the matches is yet to be determined.

He also indicated that plans are underway to establish an international standard cricket stadium in Mysuru.

Reflecting on the past three years, Prasad recognized that the cricket association encountered internal challenges but assured that his administration would address all outstanding issues and prioritize the advancement of quality cricket.

Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar remarked, "Home Minister G. Parameshwara has been assigned to oversee the arrangements, and KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad along with police officials will finalize the details."

Shivakumar underscored that this decision was made to protect Bengaluru's reputation and avert any unfortunate incidents.

This announcement follows the suspension of cricket matches at the stadium after a tragic stampede during an RCB victory celebration in July, which resulted in 11 fatalities.

Moreover, the Chinnaswamy Stadium previously lost the chance to host a Women's World Cup match due to security concerns.

The stadium has not seen any matches since the stampede on June 4, when 11 lives were lost.

The announcement was made following a meeting between KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad and other officials with Deputy CM Shivakumar in Belagavi.

They also met with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to submit a request for the resumption of cricket matches.
