Belagavi (Karnataka), Dec 12 (NationPress) Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar declared on Friday that cricket matches will be permitted at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, provided that safety measures are in place.
In a media briefing at the Circuit House in Belagavi, Shivakumar, who also serves as the Bengaluru Development Minister, remarked, "We’ve given the green light for cricket matches at the stadium, ensuring all necessary precautions are taken to safeguard attendees and uphold Bengaluru's esteemed reputation."
He mentioned that the Home Minister G Parameshwara has been entrusted with supervising the arrangements, while discussions will be held between Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) President Venkatesh Prasad and police officials to finalize the details.
Shivakumar highlighted that this decision aims to preserve Bengaluru's standing and avert any unfortunate events.
Reportedly, the Karnataka cabinet approved hosting all forthcoming cricket matches, including the 2026 IPL, at Chinnaswamy Stadium during a meeting on Thursday night.
The cabinet convened in Belagavi, directing the Home Department to implement the recommendations from the Michael De Cunha report and to ensure enhanced security measures are established.
The Karnataka State Cricket Academy will coordinate with the Home Department to agree on necessary protocols, with a meeting led by the Home Minister set to finalize arrangements.
This decision follows the halt of cricket matches at the stadium after a tragic stampede claimed the lives of 11 fans during an RCB victory celebration in July. Additionally, a women's World Cup match was canceled due to security issues.
The stadium has remained inactive since the tragic incident on June 4, which resulted in 11 fatalities.
This announcement was made after the newly-elected KSCA President and former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad, along with other officials, met with Shivakumar in Belagavi. They also conferred with the Chief Minister and presented a request for the resumption of matches.
In response to inquiries about a dinner meeting he attended amid speculation that it was a counter to an event organized by CM Siddaramaiah's faction, Shivakumar stated he participates in local lunch invitations as a gesture of goodwill.
"They extend the invitation with warmth; how could we decline? It's not an official banquet," he explained.
Shivakumar, who also holds the title of state Congress chief, noted that he and fellow party members frequently receive invitations from locals, including Congress party workers and their families.
